InBetween: Decentralizing Musical Perspectives of "Being thai"
Speaker:Pornprapit Phoasavadi
This talk invites audiences to be engaged in the process of deconstructing the normalized perception of what is ‘Thai’ and what is typically represented to a musical showcase of ‘being Thai’ to international audiences. The talk will begin with a journey that Ros Phoasavadi has embarked on as a traditional Thai musician, a university lecturer, a researcher, an ethnomusicologist, a cultural translator, a performance curator, and as herself - a resident of contemporary Bangkok. A talk will then explore the struggles that oral traditions in Southeast Asian performing arts have been dealing with.

All Thidsa Molam Band from Mahasarakham, Northeast Thailand, is one of the most well-known Molam bands at the time. Most of their members started to practice music when they were in middle school, and have performed as freelance musicians with the Molam band since then. The highlight of All Thidsa band is their live performances, in which they attract, improvise, highly engage and entertain the audiences. Having been invited to perform all over the world, All Thidsa tries to merge traditional music with western music, but still maintain their musical root of “Isan” identity.
'Amis / Pangcah language popular musics grew out of engagements with migrant labour. During the Japanese colonial period, 'Amis workers built Eastern Taiwan's transportation infrastructure, including Hualien Harbor and the Eastern Trunk railway; Taipei's rapid urban growth in the 1980s -1990s similarly depended upon 'Amis labourers, many of whom settled around rivers on Taipei's peripheries. In addition to these internal migrations, during the 1970s-1980s, nearly every man in Coastal 'Amis communities signed up for the far ocean fishing fleet.
A three-year stint on the boats conveniently filled in the gap years between finishing compulsory middle school education and military service. Wages from work on the boats paid for house construction during a time in which kinship, gender relations, and residential patterns changed greatly in 'Amis communities.
Listening to 'Amis language popular musics of this period, we can hear traces of engagement with far-ocean fishing in both musical form and lyrics. Often these traces embed modernity in the forms of expectation and waiting.
In this talk, DJ Hatfield will invite the audience to listen to a few far-ocean fishing songs and to stories. How might our listening to these songs today challenge us to rethink Taiwan's economic history? To change our responses to Southeast Asian migrants whose dreams and expectations have led them to work as labour migrants in Taipei today?

From the Northeast of Thailand to the East Coast of Taiwan: MMF 2021 presents live performances from musicians whose work touches upon the experience of migration and labor. This second segment features two ensembles from Taiwan. The Betel Nuts Brothers of Hualien, Taiwan -- represented by the duo Huigu (guitar) and Pudu (Percussion) -- will perform songs of their indigenous Pangcah folk heritage, which include traditional work songs and draw from their personal experiences as laborers in Taiwan. Also appearing is Fade to Blue, the duo of pipa player Chung Yufeng and singer/guitarist David Chen, who will perform original music inspired by various folk traditions from Taiwan, Asia, and America.
We welcome all to join us for this rare meeting of diverse sounds from Taiwan.
Musicians
Betel Nuts Brothers
The Betel Nuts Brothers are a family of Pangcah indigenous musicians from the mountainous Pacific East Coast region of Taiwan. Widely hailed for their accomplished musicianship and gift for storytelling, the "Brothers" blend traditional Pangcah (aka "Amis") song, blues, and Taiwanese folk, and have been charming audiences across Taiwan for more than two decades. Cousins Huegu (vocals/guitar) and Budu (vocals/percussion) spent much of their working lives as laborers in both rural and urban settings across the island. Huegu's twin brother Abi (vocals/percussion), a music teacher, and cousin "DocDoc"(vocals/guitar), a surgeon, round out the ensemble. Their personal experiences, especially in relation to their Amis heritage, are the main inspiration of the group's original music, which is available on two critically-acclaimed albums, Bura Bura Yan (2001) and Hunters Who Lost Their Lands (2002), both of which offer vibrant perspectives on modern indigenous life in Taiwan. |
藍。掉 Fade to Blue
Fade to Blue is a duo project by Taiwanese pipa player/composer Chung Yufeng and American roots/folk singer-songwriter David Chen. Yufeng and David draw from their respective traditions and cultures in pursuit of new musical possibilities grounded in a variety of folk styles, including American blues, bluegrass, Taiwanese Opera, and music from around Asia. Fade to Blue's distinctively fresh and playful sound is driven by Yufeng on the pipa, the robust and bold four-string lute used in traditional Chinese music; David sings and plays resonator and 12-string guitars. Their eponymous debut album (2014) was a well-regarded compilation of folk standards and original songs. The duo's latest, Island Catch (2020), is a sonically rich and lyrically poetic collection of mostly original songs tied to themes and narratives of the Chinese immigrant diaspora, "island music" culture, and traditional Asian folklore. |

This talk will focus on Molam, a genre of music from Isan, the Northeast part of Thailand, which has long served as the soul of the Isan people. It has its origins in a Lao tradition and became alive, and was preserved and practiced within the Isan region from the 18th century on. The lecture will give an overview of the history of Molam and its position in the cultural, economic, and political landscape. Particularly after the annexation of the Isan region by Siam in the 19th century, Molam became an important tool for the Isan people to express their sorrow and oppression through music. It also became an important tool for political ideology on the left, right, and center during the Cold War. In the pre-Covid period, Molam shifted its status from local music to a popular music genre nationwide, and it is today famous among the young middle classes in Bangkok, as well as in the world music community that it has reached through social media. When COVID hit the country, Molam strived to survive and it is now finding the path to rebound. ※ This talk will be conducted in English.
